A man is dead in upstate New York after he was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim just before midnight on Wednesday night, according to Syracuse.com.

The tragic incident took place on Interstate 690 near Syracuse. The victim, 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez, had been traveling in a car with three other people, but their vehicle hit a guardrail and became disabled, police said.

Police also said that Boeheim passed a sobriety test, had been interviewed and released, and is cooperating with the investigation. Boeheim drove by and hit the man as he attempted to avoid the stopped vehicle, according to police.

"He stopped immediately and exited the vehicle," said Syracuse Police Sgt. Matthew Malinowski.

After getting out of his car, Boeheim pulled out his cell phone and used the light to warn other drivers of the disabled vehicle.

William J. Fitzpatrick, the Onondaga County district attorney, told Yahoo Sports that Boeheim isn't expected to face any charges following what he called a "tragedy."

Boeheim's Syracuse men's basketball team played a home game Wednesday night, beating Louisville 69-49. Conditions in the area were poor after a freezing rain had fallen earlier in the evening, but it is not clear yet if the weather had anything to do with the accident.

On Thursday afternoon, Boeheim and Syracuse University each released a statement paying their respects to the victim and his family.
