Super Bowl Saturday?
That might sound funny, but one upstate teen is hoping it's the way of the future.
Sixteen-year-old Frankie Ruggeri, of Monroe County, has started a Change.org petition that pushes for the NFL to move the Super Bowl up one day to Saturdays. His reasoning? "Because schools are not open on the next day," he said. "No school the next morning or work. Might as well put it Saturday."
Ruggeri is seeking 35,000 signatures. As of 1:45 p.m. Friday, 34,386 had signed the petition.
He knows it's too late to do anything about Super Bowl XLIV between the Chiefs and 49ers on Feb. 2 in Miami. He's aiming for next year's Super Bowl.
All past Super Bowls have been played on Sundays.
It's not a new idea. But the NFL has said in the past that viewership is stronger on Sunday evenings.
Another solution would be to give students and workers the Monday after the Super Bowl off. In 2018, a survey by the staffing company OfficeTeam found that 72% of human resources managers think the day after the Super Bowl should be a paid national holiday from work. It also found that 27% of employees have skipped work after a sporting event, and 32% have been late the day after a big game.
In 2017, Kraft Heinz gave all its salaried employees the day off after Super Bowl LI.
