Yankees Considering Adding Rotation Depth

The Yankees might add some insurance to their rotation before the start of the season.

According to WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, the Bombers are considering adding another starting pitcher. Free agents Gio Gonzalez, Ervin Santana and perhaps Wade Miley are possibilities. 

Yankees look very solid on paper but are considering adding a starter for depth. Gio, Ervin, maybe Miley among possibilities.

The Yankees' rotation currently features Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, J.A. Happ and James Paxton, who was acquired in a trade with the Mariners in November. While those five are relatively proven commodities, most of them come with question marks. Sabathia is 38 years old and coming off knee and heart surgeries this offseason. Happ is 36 years old. Paxton, 30, has only made more than 24 starts once in his career -- and never more than 28. And Tanaka has been pitching with a partially torn elbow ligament for years. 

The Yankees also have Jordan Montgomery, who was in their rotation in 2017 and part of 2018, but he's coming off Tommy John surgery. Domingo German, Luis Cessa and Jonathan Loaisiga are other pitchers on the 40-man roster who made multiple starts last season.

Gonzalez, 33, went 10-11 last season with a 4.21 ERA for the Nationals and Brewers. The left-hander is a two-time All-Star who began his career with the A's in 2008. His best season came in 2012 with Washington, when he went 21-8 with a 2.89 ERA.

A finger injury limited Santana to just five starts last season with the Twins, as the right-hander went 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA. In 2017, he went 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA. The 36-year-old right-hander is a two-time All-Star who has also played for the Angels, Royals and Braves. 

Miley, 32, dealt with groin and oblique injuries last season in Milwaukee. In 16 starts, the southpaw went 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA. Miley, 32, has pitched eight seasons in the majors for the Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Mariners, Orioles and Brewers.
