Members of the Yankees have reportedly pitched the use of an alternate jersey in 2026, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.

Per Kuty’s report, players spoke with “higher-ups” in the organization and broached the idea of using the team’s navy blue batting practice jerseys as an alternate during occasional road games this season. The jerseys have “New York” written across the chest in similar font as their current road gray jerseys, and have gray numbers outlined in white on the back.

If the players got their wish, the Yankees would break from their norms and shed their identity as the only team in Major League Baseball without an alternate jersey, as they have never strayed from their iconic home pinstripes and road grays. Multiple players told Kuty that they are hoping the idea is approved.

That approval would come from up high by owner Hal Steinbrenner, who is just one year removed from changing the team’s longstanding facial hair policy that forbid long hair and beards.

Should Steinbrenner grant the players their wish, it would certainly be a polarizing decision among a fanbase rooted in tradition, as the Yankee jerseys are among the most recognizable in all of sports.
