Yankees Designate Kendrys Morales For Assignment

Kendrys Morales' tenure with the Yankees is over after just 19 games.

The Bronx Bombers announced Tuesday they designated the DH/first baseman for assignment. The Yankees now have seven days to find a trade partner for Morales, 36, or place him on waivers. If he clears waivers, Morales would then be released, becoming a free agent.

Dealing with a number of injuries last month, the Yankees acquired Morales and cash in a trade with the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a player to be named or cash.

Morales hit just .177 with one homer for the Yankees before placed on the IL with a left calf strain June 13. He became expendable when New York acquired Edwin Encarnacion in a trade with the Seattle Mariners three days later.

The Yankees also announced Tuesday that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. They sent down right-handed reliever Jonathan Holder after he gave up five runs without recording an out against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
