The "Boom-pa" returned to the WFAN airwaves on Monday, and already, Boomer Esiason is battling with son-in-law (and Islanders forward) Matt Martin about the fate of little Windsor Grace Martin's hockey fandom.
"I think somebody went in there and did the right thing," Boomer said on Monday's Boomer & Gio Show, referring to the red, white, and blue-tinted blanket baby Windsor was wrapped in for her first photo as a premonition that she will be a Rangers fan. "They sent a subliminal message as they put her into the first thing she was laying in. That's where it starts. Some things are meant to be, that's all I can tell you."
Of course, daddy Matty Marts later chimed in with his daughter in an Islanders wrap, sparking debate amongst the hosts of WFAN's morning show, but there is one thing there is no debate about when it comes to Boomer: he always has the best intentions at heart and will stand up for anyone close to him.
That's not just reserved for family, though, as former Cincinnati Bengals teammate Solomon Wilcots revealed in his spot as the Mystery Guest on Monday's Moose and Maggie Show.
"If something happens to one of our former teammates, if a call goes out where we're trying to help a former teammate who needs something, Boomer is the first to stand up and ask no questions," Wilcots said. "His charitable heart and mind is greater than anyone I've ever known."
Wilcots played alongside Esiason in Cincy from 1987-90, and the two were both part of the CBS family during Wilcots' tenure as an NFL analyst for the network, so they've been close for many years – and on and off the field, "Solly" has nothing but love for what Booms brings to the table.
"I can tell you this: Boomer is one of the most phenomenal leaders you'll ever see," Wilcots said. "He was a pleasure to play with because you knew certain things, he would take care of – if he had to stand in the fire for his teammates, he would."
And now, he'll do just that for Windsor, who can throw both dad and "Boom-pa" a curveball later in life by becoming a fan of another team, perhaps the next one her father plays on if he does not re-sign with the Islanders this offseason.
"This might be the one time you find a soft spot in Boomer!" Wilcots laughed. "I think a grandchild only brings that out more – most people don't get to see that side of Boomer, but it exists in spades. That kid has herself one heck of a granddad."
Even if she ends up rooting for a team her dad never plays for, or one her "Boom-pa" doesn't.
