You can't fool New York sports fans -- just ask the Giants.
The G-Men turned heads on Thursday when they posted an ill-conceived poll asking fans to pick the best quarterback, running back and wide receiver in team history.
The problem? Odell Beckham Jr. was conspicuously absent from the list despite ranking in the top five in every meaningful team receiving record.
So, we decided to set the record straight with a different poll, this time asking fans to pick the five best players in New York sports history from a list of 15 greats.
The New York Yankees, of course, had the most candidates at a whopping six -- Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The Dodgers, Mets and Rangers had one player apiece in Jackie Robinson, Tom Seaver and Mark Messier, respectively. Giants nominees include sack artists Lawrence Taylor and Michael Strahan, while the Jets were represented by greats Joe Namath and Curtis Martin. From the Knicks, fans could vote for Walt Clyde Frazier and Patrick Ewing.
Naturally, the Bambino emerged as a near unanimous choice -- hard to argue with that.
"How can you not pick Ruth?" asked dcnobies.
Others said choosing five players was like picking a favorite child.
"This is not easy, lol I can't just pick 5," said George, who settled on Ruth, Namath, Taylor, Robinson, Jeter -- and Seaver as his sixth.
Some Mets fans suggested Seaver was the only one in their heart. One even chose Tom Terrific with all five of his picks.
Another echoed a similar sentiment.
"Tom Seaver is my #1 pick. You can select the next 4 for me," said Vince R.
With Mike Piazza omitted from the tight list, one Amazin's fan was bummed that he couldn't vote for an all-Mets battery.
"Lol no Piazza what a joke," said LSUjay1290.
Of course, it wouldn't be a New York sports debate without hockey fans arguing -- not wrongly -- that their favorites were snubbed.
"Marty Brodeur would like a word," said Scott N.
Touche.
Another hockey fan had a different legend in mind.
"Where's Denis Potvin?" asked journalist Mark C. Healy.
One fan leaned hard into historical impact, saying any list that doesn't include Ruth and Robinson should be discounted.
Others took the cheeky route.
"Why isn't Mackey Sasser on this list?"" asked Antonio.
A quintet of Frazier, Namath, Taylor, Jeter and Mantle would be "the greatest party of all time," quipped Nick P.
