Bill Belichick to the Atlanta Falcons is beginning to feel like a real possibility and for Boomer Esiason, it’s essentially a done deal.
“I would say this is definitely going to happen,” he said on WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” on Friday. “Definitely feels like it’s fait accompli.”
The 71-year-old head coach has already met with the Falcons and is reportedly meeting with them again over the weekend for a second interview.
“Everything I’ve read out of Atlanta is that everything went smoothly – the initial meeting with Arthur Blank, the people in the building are comfortable with Belichick and he’s comfortable with them,” Esiason added. “I think it’s just a matter of time before this thing gets announced.”
Belichick would be going into a situation in Atlanta where there is still uncertainty about the quarterback – something Esiason’s co-host, Greg Giannotti, believes could tarnish the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach’s legacy.
Esiason says Belichick is motivated to pass Don Shula as the all-time winningest coach, whom he is 26 wins behind at 302.
“He wants that record, he wants to coach,” Esiason said. “Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Bucs. Tom Brady won a Super Bowl with the Bucs. Depending on who [Atlanta’s] quarterback is going to be – and they’re going to wipe out that quarterback room for sure – that will determine how far they will go. They do have good players, some of the most explosive offensive players in the league, and they will add to that, for sure. Arthur Blank is getting up there and wants to win.”
