The All-Star break has given fans a chance to assess their teams before the second half of the season, and for the Yankees and Mets, the assessment has been largely critical.
Two New York baseball figures that have been under fire on the WFAN phone lines have been Brian Cashman and Steve Cohen, the latter a more surprising one, as Cashman has been criticized by vocal corners of the Yankee fanbase for years.
Some fans want Cashman to acknowledge that his way is not working, as the Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2009, but C-Mac wonders why Cashman would make such an admission less than a year after his team reached the ALCS.
"What other general manager in all of sports would win the division that you could argue was the toughest in the sport, had three playoff teams in it, win 99 games, make the final four, and then tell you everything they do is wrong?" C-Mac said. "No other GM in sports would get to that point in their sport and tell you everything they did was wrong.
"If they fired Brian Cashman tomorrow…I'm not gonna cry about it. I'm not a Cashman lover…but I understand why he's not gonna come out and fall on the sword for you when he just made the ALCS. No other GM would."
Other critical fans want to see the Yanks splurge for more free agent stars, like Cohen, and while C-Mac agrees that the team could spend more money and increase payroll more in line with the franchise's increases in revenue, he believes it's often overlooked that Cashman and the Yankees signed Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole to record contracts, while taking on Giancarlo Stanton's contract.
"They should spend more money. There's no doubt in my mind," C-Mac said. "But they still spend money. They've spent big money."
As for Cohen, to hear criticism already from an owner who succeeded the Wilpons and immediately dealt out the highest payroll in baseball seems premature, to say the least.
"I think it's a bit much to get on Cohen already," C-Mac said. "He's willing to write the checks. That's it. They signed their own guys. They signed Nimmo. They needed a starter to replace deGrom, so they signed Verlander to a short-term deal. They spent their money. It's the highest payroll in baseball.
"You're ready to kill the owner? He writes the checks, he's changed everything…the owner is not the problem."
