Boomer Esiason threw for nearly 38,000 yards and 247 touchdowns in his 14-year NFL career, the last tallies in each category coming on a 77-yard pass to Darnay Scott in the fourth quarter of a Week 17 Bengals win over the Ravens in 1997.
The Booms used to be one of the elite, but that was almost 23 calendar years ago, and Norman Julius Esiason is now looking at his 60th birthday coming up soon. Athletes always have that competitive fire, though, so Gio had to know on Tuesday's show: could Boomer lead one more TD drive today if he had to?
"If you knew you had the best offensive line in football, and were in the shotgun, do you think you could lead one touchdown drive?" Gio asked. "You get the ball on your 25, you think you can do it?"
"I can call the running plays, and I could probably pull a few playaction passes out of my ass," Boomer laughed.
Gio upped the stakes by giving Boomer Kansas City's offense against the Jets defense, and then just said all Boomer had to do was get downfield far enough to score points…and then we got our answer.
"In reality, probably not, because it doesn't look as fast on TV as it actually is…but of course I'm going to tell you yes!" Boomer crowed.
It ended up as quite a discussion (spoiler: Gio thinks Booms could at least get into field goal range), one you just have to hear for yourself below – and decide for yourself if Booms could still go!
