Devils acquire Siegenthaler from Capitals, deal Kulikov to Edmonton

The New Jersey Devils made a shuffle on their defensive depth chart ahead NHL Trade Deadline, acquiring defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler from Washington in exchange for a conditional third-round pick on Sunday, and then dealing defenseman Dmitry Kulikov to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick just before Monday's deadline.

The team also announced that defensemen Sami Vatanen, who was placed on waivers Sunday, has been claimed by the Dallas Stars.

On the Kulikov deal, the pick becomes a third-rounder if Edmonton wins a first-round series in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and in the Siegenthaler deal, the pick surrendered by New Jersey is the conditional pick they acquired from Arizona in the December 2019 Taylor Hall deal, which could become a first-rounder or second-rounder under certain criteria – and if it does, the Devils will instead send their own third-rounder to the Caps.

Siegenthaler, 23, has played just seven games this season, but had two goals and seven assists in 64 games for the Caps last season, and also appeared in seven playoff games. In 97 career games over three seasons, Siegenthaler has two goals, 11 assists, 55 penalty minutes, and a plus-14 rating.

Kulikov, 30, signed a one-year deal with the Devils prior to this season, and had two assists and 26 PIM in 38 games this year.

Vatanen, 29, spent three seasons in New Jersey (2017-20) before being dealt to Carolina last February, and then re-signed with the Devils prior to this season. He had two goals and four assists in 30 games with the Devils this season, and 14 goals and 60 assists in 187 games overall in Jersey.
