Evan: Baseball free agency, offseason system is 'broken'

As pitchers and catchers report to spring training, Evan says the baseball offseason is officially broken as multiple big-name free agents are still out there, even as players report to camp to prepare for the season.

"Spring training is here, baseball is on its way back, and as we sit here on Feb. 13, the reigning National League Cy Young winner is still available," Evan said. "Cody Bellinger, who had a really good year, is still available. Playoff hero Jordan Montgomery is still available.

"They have a system that is broken. On March 13, exactly one month from today, the NFL free agency starts. And you know what's gonna happen at this station and at water coolers across the city and all over the country? We're gonna be talking about that, and within five days, it'll all be over. It'll be five days of hysteria…and baseball doesn't have it."

The NFL and NBA have salary caps and signing deadlines, which causes a frenzy of signings that take over sports talk for a window of their respective offseasons. Baseball drags out, and this offseason is proving to be no exception, and Evan says something has to change.

"The baseball offseason had no hysteria, no excitement, and as we're tying to get excited for the year, you have 3-6 really good free agents that are still out there," Evan said. "Tell me the sport isn't broken."
