Giants special teams coach says Jets lined up illegally on crucial missed field goal

Giants special teams coach Thomas McGaughey says Jets rookie Will McDonald was lined up illegally when Graham Gano missed a 37-yard field goal in the final minute of the fourth quarter on Sunday, which opened the window for an improbable Jets comeback.

Therefore, McGaughey argued that there should have been a flag, which would have led to a new set of downs for Big Blue, and would have allowed them to run out the clock and seal a victory rather than suffer a painful overtime loss that likely ended their season.

"You can't cover the center. He was covering the center," McGaughey said, via the New York Post. "If you align within the framework of the center, that's an illegal formation. Can't do that. You have to be completely outside the framework of the center."

Other reporters noted that McDonald, who legally leaped over the line to disrupt the kick, was lined up legally, but McGaughey maintained that McDonald should have been flagged.

Asked if he had heard from the NFL about a potential mistake, Brian Daboll said he would "keep that private."
