“Let’s just say Bill Belichick does come available. If you're John Mara, how would you not say, ‘okay, you're coming here, we have a first or second overall pick to draft a quarterback and we want you to rebuild the whole thing.’ How do you not do that for your fan base?”
An interesting thought from Boomer Esiason, given that Brian Daboll went to the playoffs in his first year as Giants coach but is now suffering through a season that has already lost Daniel Jones and should bring a Top 5 pick.
“If the Giants had the first or second overall pick and Bill wanted to coach the Giants, there's no way John Mara would say no,” Gio said. “As much as I’m sure he doesn't want to do this again with getting rid of a coach after a second year, this is an extenuating circumstances that nobody really expected.”
As Boomer noted, you never know what happens inside the building, but this season has been a “debacle” in every way, and “there is a lot on the plate of the New York Giants.”
“They thought maybe they were turning the corner last year and maybe last year was a little bit of a mirage because of their schedule, and because Daniel Jones stayed healthy and they were able to get a lot out of him,” Boomer said. “You come back this year, you got a much tougher schedule and things don't go right at the beginning of the year, and now all of a sudden here we are again, unfortunately for the coaching staff and for the players that feel it’s rinse and repeat of what happened two years ago under Joe Judge.”
John from Connecticut called in to disagree, saying it’s not all Daboll’s fault, and replacing him with a guy who has a short shelf life baseline is a bad idea – but if you’re John Mara, can you say no if Bill says yes?
“When you look at where the Giants are at 2-8, there are seven games left in the season, and that is an eternity,” Boomer said. “There's a lot of things that can happen during these seven weeks, and you just never know how people are going to view the end product when we finally get to that.
Those coaches are in a tough spot over there, but they know the job they took and the realities of the business.”
“Especially because we've seen it twice beforehand in that second year,” Gio replied. “I like Brian Daboll a lot, and if Bill Belichick isn’t available, I’m sticking with Daboll regardless of what happens the rest of the year – you can’t all of a sudden say the guy’s a dummy after everything this year. But, if John Mara gets an opportunity to hire Bill Belichick and they've got a chance at Drake Maye or Caleb Williams, there's no way that John Mara is saying no to that.”
