Bad news for Big Blue faithful: it took 17 weeks, but in their biggest game of 2020, the Washington Football Team FINALLY scored on their opening possession of a game.
Following an Eagles three-and-out to start the ‘win and in’ game for Washington, the Football Team drove 91 yards on 15 plays over 8:13 of game time, finishing the drive with a five-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Terry McLaurin – two players who did not play in last week’s loss to Carolina, where Washington could’ve clinched the NFC East with a win.
With the extra point by Dustin Hopkins, those were the first points on an opening drive by Washington all year – and in fact were the WFT’s first points in a first quarter since Thanksgiving Day, as they were shut out in the opening quarter of four straight games after putting up seven against Dallas.
And, as mentioned, they couldn’t have come at a better time.
If Washington wins (or ties), of course, they will win the NFC East at 7-9 and host Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next weekend in a Wild Card Game. If Philadelphia wins, however, then the New York Giants will win the NFC East, having the same 6-10 record as the WFT (and Dallas) but winning the head-to-head tiebreaker by going 3-1 against the other two teams.
Even worse, Giants fans: Jalen Hurts threw an interception on Philadelphia’s second play from scrimmage after the score, and Washington converted into a 42-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead.
