BT and Sal agree that John Mara sticking with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll next season is a shortsighted move that can wind up setting the Giants back even more in the future.
Opening Monday’s show by reacting to the breaking news, BT and Sal both sounded off on Mara’s decision, which they believe would have likely been different had New York lost to the Colts and finished the year winless at home, which isn’t how these two critical positions should be evaluated.
“It’s just delaying the inevitable…as the year progressed, the Giants got worse,” Sal said. “It was a disastrous year, maybe the worst in the history of their franchise.
“If you’re keeping them, there has to be reason beyond, ‘Well, let’s just give them one more year.’ That’s not good enough. I would like to ask Mr. Mara one question: ‘Why?’ What have you seen over the last three years that makes you think this is the tandem?”
BT is in full agreement that this decision doesn’t seem like one that has the long-term future of the franchise in mind, and worries it is simply a Band-Aid that will only put the Giants in a worse spot not far down the road.
“It’s not what I would do. I would not have brought these men back,” BT said. “If the next announcement isn’t a contract extension for both of these men, then next year for the Giants is going to be what this year was for the Jets, where we’re midseason and the Giants stink again - which they probably will. And now you have a situation where you have two men who were granted a reprieve this year…so now everything they do this offseason is going to be, you would think, an attempt to save their job and change the image, which could lead to making shortsighted decisions.
“The Giants have not shown the evidence that they are prepared to get this right. This is not good…They’re punting. They’re punting and playing the field position game rather than trying to score…I just think they are set up to fail for a while.”
