Sal: Daniel Jones belief makes it hard to continue to buy into Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll
The premiere of Offseason Hard Knocks was highlighted by Joe Schoen expressing his continued belief in Daniel Jones, declaring that even Patrick Mahomes would have struggled behind the protection that Jones was dealing with last season.
Schoen’s comments of “this is the year for Daniel” made the rounds after the episode aired, and for Sal, it was a hit to Schoen’s credibility, as he can’t believe the team is still trying to figure out what they have in Jones.
“When will it end? When will it stop? When will they realize that he ain’t it?” Sal said. “Not gonna overpay a running back because you need to rebuild the offensive line. Need to get him some weapons…is that putting Daniel in the right spot, with the offensive line?
“It’s gonna be another year of evaluating Daniel Jones again. I don’t care who is protecting him, who he hands the ball off to, or who he throws it to. Daniel Jones himself, in five seasons, has proven to be inconsistent at best. And now we expect that in year six, this is gonna be the year of Daniel Jones? I’m not buying it.”
Jones had his best season in 2022, Schoen and Brian Daboll’s first year with the Giants, but last year was back to status quo, as Jones struggled to get anything done through the air while also struggling to stay healthy. Now, the Giants seem set on getting another good look at Jones in 2024, and Sal says they should have moved on long ago.
“I’m also now reluctant to buy into people that I believe in in Schoen and Daboll,” Sal said. “I’m reluctant to buy into them turning this thing around with the way that they have structured this team, allotting so much money to a quarterback who in their own words said they’re not sure about.”
