Giants legend Eli Manning joined BT and Sal live from Giants camp on Monday, and praised the mental makeup of his successor in Daniel Jones, who is posed to lead Big Blue in the coming years after signing his big contract.
“You gotta be mentally tough,” Manning said. “It’s not always gonna be perfect or pretty. There are gonna be terrible games and rough seasons where you gotta grind to it. But you can’t let one game lead to another.
“Daniel has done a great job with that. it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for him. He’s had turnover issues, but he’s fixed them. He’s taken the blame when he’s messed up, spread out the credit when things are going well. He has the right attitude and this team has that attitude.”
BT asked Manning if he felt Jones’ new contract meant bigger expectations were warranted for the former sixth overall pick, and whether it was “unfair” to expect bigger numbers from Jones now that he received his payday and financial commitment from the team.
“That’s not unfair,” Manning said. “When you get that second contract and you’re gonna be the quarterback for the future, there’s gonna be expectations. I think he understands that and knows that…with Daniel, it’s still about winning games. He has a lot of rushing touchdowns and rushing yards. Those things add up. It’s not about throwing touchdowns, it’s about getting touchdowns.”
