Evan: Two big issues could limit Giants to six or seven wins this season

The Giants have been overshadowed by the Jets this offseason, with all the hype surrounding Aaron Rodgers and Gang Green, which many believe has allowed Big Blue to fly under the radar before pouncing on the unsuspecting NFL world once the season begins.

But Evan says that could backfire, and the Giants’ quiet offseason could be masking two major deficiencies on the roster, which could lead them to a six or seven win season.

“Because they’ve been so under the radar, we have spent no time talking about the legitimate issues that this team has,” Evan said. “We’ve heard all about the Jets’ issues…and one of those is the offensive line. Andrew Thomas is the best left tackle in the NFL. I’ll give you that. Evan Neal sucked last year, and you all want to make the assumption that Evan Neal is gonna pull an Andrew Thomas, and you want to assume that the rest of the offensive line is gonna make a jump to give Daniel Jones more time to throw bombs down the field now that he’s got more weapons? I can’t make that assumption.

“You need Evan Neal to make a jump. You need the rest of the offensive line to take a jump…to, forget about taking the next step, to repeat what you did last season…For every Andrew Thomas, there is Eric Flowers.

“So, Jalin Hyatt, Darren Waller, does it matter that Daniel Jones has these new weapons if he doesn’t have time to throw?”

In addition to Evan’s questions regarding an offensive line that was manhandled by dynamic pass rushers last season, including the Eagles in the playoffs, he also sees a potential problem in the secondary, where there is a notable lack of experience.

Sure, that lack of experience didn’t hurt the Jets last year, but he doesn’t see the Giants’ rookie corners doing what Sauce Gardner did last season.

“How many times do rookie cornerbacks come out and do well in year one? The answer is not many,” Evan said. “The Giants are gonna start two rookie cornerbacks [Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins III] when the season starts. Two cornerbacks on the field, one a sixth-round pick, one a late first-round pick, and you’re expecting them to do well this season. I have no idea what to expect.”
