Rush, 26, went undrafted out of Central Michigan in 2017, but spent three years on the Cowboys’ roster or practice squad after signing with the team that summer. He appeared in two games in 2017, completing one of three passes for two yards and rushing twice for 13 yards, but did not play in either 2018 or 2019 and was waived in May when Dallas signed Andy Dalton.
Smith, 28, was also an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2015, and has been with five teams, including the Giants, in six years in the league. In 49 career games (48 of which came under Garrett in Dallas from 2015-18), he has 101 rushes for 364 yards and five touchdowns, and has also caught 30 passes for 272 yards and one score.
The moves were made so that Big Blue could add two other ex-NFC Easters and Garrett Guys to the practice squad: former Cowboys and Washington (and Niners and Cardinals) RB Alfred Morris, and QB Clayton Thorsen, who was a fifth-round pick of the Eagles in 2019 but spent most of last year on Dallas' practice squad.
