The Giants have already begun the process of trimming their roster to 53 ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.
On Monday, the Giants announced that they have waived offensive linemen Josh Rivas and Eric Smith, wide receivers Keelan Doss and Travis Toivonen, defensive backs Yusuf Corker and Olaijah Griffin, and kicker Ryan Santoso.
The Giants had signed Santoso last week to kick in Sunday’s preseason finale, as Graham Gano was still in concussion protocol. Santoso made all five of his kicks, three PAT and two field goals, in the Giants’ 31-27 loss to the Jets.
Doss was signed this summer after spending 2021 in Raiders training camp and on the Jets and Falcons’ practice squads. The fourth-year receiver has 11 career catches for 139 yards, all in 2019 with the Raiders.
Toivonen spent most of last season on the Giants’ practice squad as an undrafted free agent, after a career at the University of North Dakota where he caught 139 passes for 1,719 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was signed to a futures deal in January but released just before camp, only to be re-signed last week
Corker and Rivas were signed by the Giants as undrafted rookie free agents this summer, while Griffin was claimed off waivers from Buffalo in July after spending 2021 on the Bills’ practice squad. His claim to fame outside football is that he is the son of rapper Warren G.
Smith was terminated as a vested veteran, ending his second stint with the Giants. He has four games of NFL experience, two of which came with Big Blue in 2019, and he signed earlier this month after being cut by Arizona.
The roster stands at 74, meaning 21 more cuts need to be made by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
