Joe Schoen is used to New York after working in the Bills front office, but nothing could have prepared him for working in New York City.
Talking with Carton and Roberts on Wednesday, the new Giants GM admitted that the bright spotlight of the Big Apple has caught him off guard a bit in his first months on the job.
“The job part is what I thought it would be…everything that comes with the job is definitely different than Buffalo when you talk about New York City, and all those exterior factors outside the building,” Schoen said.
“I’m not sure I was totally prepared for what comes with New York City, that’s for sure.”
Schoen recalled one instance where the crave for football news in New York took him by surpise.
“I interviewed somebody and they didn’t get the job, and it became a story,” Schoen said. “I can’t believe people care about that!”
Schoen was also asked about Logan Ryan’s grievance filed against the team, citing guaranteed money that he felt he was owed, and said that was an example of how much different things are in New York.
“Thirty one other teams probably wouldn’t have reported that,” Schoen said. “That would have never made it to the papers, because it happens all the time…a grievance is a disagreement, it’s not a big deal.”
While the spotlight is far more intense than Schoen expected, he is embracing it, enjoying having a hand in running a team that has so much attention surrounding it.
“The stuff that’s reported, it’s amazing how tied in people are and what’s reported throughout the entire year, whether it’s free agency, drafts, leading up to it, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Schoen said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
