Devonta Freeman is officially a New York Giant…at the expense of both Saquon Barkley AND Sterling Shepard.

Freeman is ostensibly replacing Barkley on the field, but his roster spot was opened when the Giants placed Shepard on injured reserve due to the toe injury he suffered at the end of the first half of Big Blue’s loss in Chicago on Sunday.

Shepard came up limping after jamming his foot into the turf on a catch at the end of the half, and while he came out for the second half to try to see if he could go, he was unable to and missed the second half.

Now, he will miss at least the next three games, leaving Darius Slayton and Golden Tate as the team’s top two receivers. The Giants currently also have C.J. Board and Damion Ratley on the active roster, and the team has four wideouts on the practice squad that can be elevated to the active roster on Sunday if needed.

According to WFAN's Paul Dottino, Freeman will wear No. 31, a jersey that hasn't been worn by a running back with Big Blue since Frank Cephous in 1984.
