Saquon Barkley hasn’t been putting up the same numbers over the last two weeks like he was earlier in the season, which could either show why the Giants should be hesitant to commit to him beyond this season, or why he is so imperative to the success of the team, depending on which point of view you choose.
Regardless which side you’re on, Gio says the Giants cannot sign Barkley to a big contract like the Cowboys did with Ezekiel Elliott.
“If I’m the Giants, I’d be looking at Joe Mixon money, and if I’m Saquon Barkey, I’m looking at Zeke money,” Gio said. “That’s why there’s gonna be an impasse, and probably was.
“The Giants can’t cave on this. This is not Aaron Judge. This is not, ‘If he walks, this is devastating to us.’”
Mixon signed a four-year deal worth $48 million with the Bengals, while Elliott inked a six-year, $90 million deal with over $50 million of it being guaranteed. A deal like Mixon’s would be more than the $7.2 million Barkley is making now, but wouldn’t be an inflated contract like Elliott’s.
Gio wouldn’t go higher than a Mixon deal, though he knows how important Barkley is to this Giants team, declaring that New York will only win on Sunday if Barkley puts up numbers like he was earlier in the season.
“All I need to do is see what Saquon did. I don’t need to see any Commanders stuff,” Gio said. “If you’re telling me Saquon is rushing for 36 yards and has two catches for 15 yards, you’ve got no shot. You’ve got absolutely no shot.’
