Joe Schoen: Expectation is for Daniel Jones to be starting quarterback when he returns

In his bye week address on Monday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters that the “expectation” is for Daniel Jones to be the starting quarterback once he is ready to return from ACL surgery.

“He’s five days off his surgery. He’s in there rehabbing right now,” Schoen said. “The expectation is that when Daniel is healthy, he will be our starting quarterback. We don’t have a crystal ball in terms of how the rehab is gonna go. Different patients respond differently to these surgeries…but that is the expectation moving forward.”

Schoen also says he still believes in Jones, who struggled this season behind a banged-up offensive line and with Saquon Barkley missing multiple games. But the Jones that was on the field this season did not look like the one who had a career year a season ago, which earned him a $160 million contract.

Schoen believes the Jones from last year is the version of Jones that can return once he is ready to play next season.

“I've seen it. You guys all saw last season. The guy won 10 games,” Schoen said. “He won a road playoff game for the Giants. You guys saw the preseason.

“I just think we got punched in the nose early on, dug ourselves a hole, and couldn’t get out of it. We’re trying to right now, but still believe in Daniel, and the person.”

Schoen also added that the Giants will take the best player available in the draft if it helps the team when asked if drafting a quarterback is on the table.
