Joe Schoen told reporters on Tuesday that he is “cautiously optimistic” that the Giants will reach an agreement with both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley, but when it comes to Jones, he has “no doubt” that he will be the team’s quarterback next season.
“We’ve been in constant contact with his agents,” Schoen said. “We had productive conversations yesterday, we have more scheduled today…we’ll continue to hammer out and get closer to getting something done, hopefully.”
Whether an agreement is reached or Jones is given the franchise tag, it seems he will be back in New York next season (though Schoen added that tagging Jones wouldn’t be the best route for building the rest of the team). As for Barkley, Schoen said the two sides are certainly closer to an agreement than they were when they met during the bye week, but there is still a remaining gap, and Big Blue may have to “draw a line in the sand,” despite Barkley’s reputation in the locker room and his resurgent season.
“I think in the negotiations, you take all that into account…Walter Payton Man of the Year, I love that about him, but you also got to look at production, durability, games played, production versus other comps around the league,” Schoen said.
“You have to draw a line in the sand like, 'we're not going any further, and if he goes past this, let's shift to Plan B.' Hopefully, we don't get to that, but we’ve went through all those plans.”
