QB wasn't not a priority for Joe Schoen in NFL Draft, but he wasn't changing Giants' plans for one

The Giants did not exercise Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option, meaning this will be his final guaranteed season in New York.

That said, the Giants have a full QB room, with backup Tyrod Taylor signed to a two-year deal, Davis Webb back after time on Buffalo’s practice squad, and 2021 practice squad member Brian Lewerke – who served as Jake Fromm’s backup in Week 18 – also in the mix.

So, even as almost every signal-caller in the draft fell to the third round and below, Giants GM Joe Schoen never felt the urge to change draft plans and pull the trigger on someone.

“I wouldn't say we didn't say it wasn't a priority, because we did do work on those guys and saw them all play live, plus we did send a quarterback coach and coordinator to spend time with those guys and Zoom and other things,” Schoen said of the 2022 class. “Again we are going to evaluate the entire board across all positions, and when we think the time is right, regardless of position, we'll pull the trigger if we think it's best for us.”

Nine quarterbacks ended up being selected in the draft, and nine more have already signed as undrafted free agents – including local products Jack Coan (Colts) and Anthony Brown (Ravens). None of those 18 are Giants, however, leaving the four they currently have as their options for 2022.

Jones could, of course, be retained via the franchise tag after this season if the Giants choose, the only ramification to that versus the fifth-year option being financial – but that said, the lack of option also gives the Giants an out if Jones has another topsy-turvy year and they decide to go in another direction.

Right now, though, Big Blue is banking on the former being the tough decision they have to make.

“I'll just speak on the few weeks that I've been around him. I've been very pleased with how he's approached things,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “He's intelligent, picking up stuff really well. Again, the pieces around him, we have a lot of work that needs to be done but I'm encouraged with my interactions with him up to this point.”
