The intro Moose & Maggie gave Logan Ryan – a little Biggie Smalls – for his bi-weekly Giants Report hit hyped the DB up quite a bit…but then, he gave out some bulletin board material of his own against the Philadelphia Eagles right off the bat.
“As the season goes on, every game becomes more important as you see the end pic. That win was important because we didn’t finish against the Eagles last time,” Ryan said. “I don’t like hearing about streaks and curses. We feel like we’re a better team than the Eagles, and we got to prove it on the scoreboard.”
There’s a very slim albeit non-zero chance that the two teams could meet again sometime this season, but Ryan wasn’t shy about giving more bulletin board fodder when he was asked if he, unlike Joe Judge, believes in momentum in the NFL.
“I think momentum can build belief, but just because we beat the Eagles doesn’t mean we’re going to steamroll whoever we have next. We’re out here practicing in the rain, monsoons, swampy fields…I don’t think the Eagles are,” Ryan said. “I don’t think the Eagles work harder than us, and that’s what it takes. I think we’re the hardest working team in football, and just because we’ve won some games doesn’t mean we can stop that. We have to stick with this.”
He never said the Eagles don’t work hard, just not as hard as Big Blue, and he doubled down on that.
“I’ve got former teammates everywhere – I came from New England where nobody works harder, and then I went to Tennessee with Mike Vrabel and it was the same,” Ryan said. “I’m an extremely hard worker, and we’re putting in work.
I don’t think the Eagles are matching that, and they’re not on the mission I’m on personally. I think it shows with how both games went, honestly. Maybe we see them again, but I’ll take my guys any day of the week.”
One example he cited was how the Giants held the Eagles to 0-for-9 on third downs last Sunday – “I don’t think I’ve ever done that in my career,” Ryan noted, “but they told us we can’t get off the field on third downs” – and a big key to that was one of his fellow corners, James Bradberry.
“He’s the best corner in the league, though he’ll never say it. They target him a lot because he’s on their best player,” Ryan said. “(Travis) Fulgham from Philly, he’s had a good year; they targeted him at the end of our game last time and in the red area, but in the key moments, we put Bradberry on their best player. In a lot of key moments, a lot of quarterbacks put the ball towards their best player, and that’s why we do it. He’s playing like an All-Pro right now.”
As it stands, the Giants are technically 1.5 games behind the Eagles in the division heading into the bye, but that could be down to just the half-game (thanks to Philly’s tie with Cincinnati) come Monday – and with six games to go after that, it’s going to take every one to get where the Giants want to be.
“You are what you are, what your record says, but we still have games to play. Normally, when you have a new system and a lot of turnover, you have 4 preseason games. We didn’t – no team did, so no excuse – but normally, the first 4 games aren’t really an indication of what you’ll be,” Ryan said. “In New England, they say football doesn’t start until after Thanksgiving, so this is when you start separating yourself from the pack. We had a slow start, but this isn’t the end of it, and we have to play one week at a time. Three wins isn’t going to get you anything in this league, but seven losses isn’t out of it.
Logan Ryan did also talk about a lot more Giants-related stuff – including a “defense I drew up on a napkin” that Maggie joked was “The Annexation of Puerto Rico” – so check out his entire segment below!
