Joe Judge has maintained that the Giants will be cautious in bringing back Saquon Barkley back from his ACL tear, and the head coach reiterated that plan at the start of New York’s minicamp.
Barkley is at the team facility in East Rutherford, but Judge said that the running back won’t be participating in team activities, instead continuing his rehab process during the early mornings before the rest of the team arrives.
“We’re going to make sure we take Saquon’s rehab at the correct rate for his individual body and his injury," Judge told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s not any mirror of anybody else’s injury out there. We got to make sure we let him get at his pace when we put him on the field, that he can play 100 percent aggressive and confident that he can go out there and he’s going to play safe and play effective.”
Barkley will likely sit out all of minicamp to continue to rehab, but he is still expected to be ready for Week 1, which is still three months away.
Barkley tore his ACL in Week 2 last season and left a massive void in New York’s offense, but with a number of new pieces added through free agency and the draft, Barkley hopes to return to a revamped scoring attack and get back to being a 1,000-yard rusher in 2021. But the Giants will continue to be cautious with their prized running back.
“I know he’s champing at the bit to get back on the field, but we’re going to take it day by day,” Judge said. “He’s been getting better every day at work.”
