Xavier McKinney and the Giants walked off the wet field at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night, staring up at a scoreboard that showed an “embarrassing” 40-0 loss to the rival Cowboys to open up the season.
“It’s embarrassing, but it’s over with now,” McKinney said. “We gotta put that one to rest, see what we can do to improve, and get the next one.”
Sunday night was supposed to be a statement by a team expecting to take the next step following a surprising divisional round appearance the year before, but instead, it was a sobering reminder of how far this team still has to go to catch the top of the division. Still, McKinney believes Big Blue will turn the page and get back on track in Week 2, and hopefully restore some faith that this season won’t be one of regression.
Luckily, New York gets the lowly Cardinals in Week 2.
“Things happen. We just did not execute today, man,” McKinney said. “But, it’s Week 1. It’s one game. We’re gonna figure it out, and we'll be a lot better next week. It won't look like this next week.”
