Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov has been fined $5,000 for charging Rangers center Vincent Trochek during Saturday's preseason game at UBS Arena, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday.
The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
The hit happened in the third period when Romanov hit Trochek along the boards, in what appeared to be a high hit and was whistled for a two-minute charging minor. Jimmy Vesey was hit with a roughing penalty for going after Romanov after the big hit.
Romanov, acquired via offseason trade from the Canadiens, led with his left shoulder as his skates left the ice, possibly leading to the department's ruling.
The Islanders won the game 3-1.
