Cal Clutterbuck’s 600th game as an Islander will officially have to wait until the first year of his new extension, and his 1000th NHL game may need to wait longer than that.
The New York Islanders announced Thursday that Clutterbuck needs shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the season, while defenseman Scott Mayfield will be out four-to-six weeks with a lower body injury.
Mayfield’s injury may be season-ending as well, as the Isles’ regular season ends April 29 – just over five weeks from Thursday’s announcement – and the team entered Thursday 17 points out of a playoff spot.
Clutterbuck, 34, just signed a two-year, $3.5 million extension earlier this week that ensures he will reach a decade on Long Island. He had six goals and nine assists in 59 games this season, his last his 587th over nine seasons with the Isles.
He also has 933 total NHL games on his resume, so while getting to 600 as an Isle is pretty certain next year, he will need to play 67 games next year to hit 1000 in 2022-23.
Mayfield, 29, has three goals and 15 assists in 61 games this year, his seventh in the NHL with the Isles.
