In a surprising move, the Islanders announced Monday morning that head coach Barry Trotz has been relieved of his head coaching duties.

Trotz, after four years as head coach, oversaw a disappointing 2021-22 season, where New York finished with 84 points and missed the postseason. But Trotz was coming off back-to-back appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals before this season’s disappointment, when many of the team’s main pieces returned to try and get the Islanders over the hump and into the Stanley Cup.
