Bilal Powell was one of the more popular Jets on the field and in the locker room in the 2010s, and now, he has officially come back home to retire.
On Tuesday, Powell signed a one-day deal with Gang Green and retired as a Jet, putting the official final touch on a nine-year career that ended on the field in 2019.
Powell, still just 33, was the Jets’ fourth-round pick in 2011 and played 109 games over his nine seasons with Gang Green, recording 5,275 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns. His best season was 2017, when he set career highs with 178 carries, 772 yards, and five rushing scores.
He was a prolific receiver out of the backfield the previous two seasons, recording 105 total catches for 776 yards and four scores in 2015-16.
And Powell is still just as popular, based on this hype video the Jets put out to celebrate his retirement, and this Tweet from owner Woody Johnson:
Powell was moved by it all, saying in his own video that he is a “Jet for life” and thanking everyone in the organization on his own Twitter.
