Boomer & Gio spent much of the first half of Tuesday’s show discussing Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s medical emergency on Monday Night Football and the aftermath, part of which you can hear here:
When the show began in earnest after 8 a.m., though, it was on to the Jets, who are going through their final week of the season as lame ducks, hoping only to win on Sunday and possibly spoil Miami’s playoff hopes.
And after that’s over, well, Boomer says big changes are coming for Gang Green.
“I would think that there are going to be some significant changes along the line here,” Boomer said. “I have no inside knowledge, but in the years of doing this job, watching this team and how the fan base has reacted to the team and ownership has reacted to the fan base, someone is going to have to pay the price for the failure of Zach Wilson and what has happened to the team.”
Boomer did say that it’s easy to pin a big part of the Jets’ failure this season on injuries, but Wilson's regression may overshadow that.
“I can make an argument that the amount of injuries they’ve sustained caused them to lose the last five weeks of the season, especially on the offense,” Boomer said. “But what has happened to Zach Wilson is a complete disaster. That is 100 percent on them, and that is the second overall pick who was supposed to be the leader of your franchise, and that’s where it’s going to get dicey and messy.”
Gio decided to do some role playing between Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh on that topic, and wondered who exactly has to pay for it?
“For me, if I was Joe Douglas, I’d say this is on me as the GM; I made the decision, so I’ll take the heat for picking the wrong guy,” Boomer said. “But Joe may also go to the mat and say that he still believes Wilson has something to offer, but maybe not with us.”
Boomer offered that a change of scenery for Wilson might bring out the best in him the way leaving Tampa Bay for San Francisco revitalized Steve Young,
“Maybe that’s what Zach needs; he needs a change of scenery, and I would imagine he’s going to want that himself,” Boomer said, “and I’d imagine Joe Douglas is going to have to re-do what he did with Sam Darnold: trade him and get some assets back.”
Both men noted that Douglas has been good with that in the past with Jamal Adams as well, and Boomer reiterated he trusts the GM to do the right thing for the franchise – and Gio doubled down by saying that he did draft the likely Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year as well.
But, none of that matters when you’re 7-9 after starting 6-3, and perhaps it’s going to come from the lack of adjustment for those injuries.
“That offensive line has been a mess because of injuries, and the running backs have been a mess since Breece Hall got hurt,” Boomer said, “but somebody has to pay for the final five games and seven of the last nine.
Gio posited Mike LaFleur, the offensive coordinator, and Boomer immediately shot back “maybe,” leading Gregg to punctuate his big change:
“If I were the Jets and Joe Douglas, I’d hire a more experienced offensive coordinator.”
