As the Jets continue with their long list of head coaching candidates, Boomer Esiason has one concern with how the process has gone so far.
Gang Green may be doing its due diligence by getting a sense of every thinkable head coaching candidate, but Boomer isn’t sure how this process can be done while the general manager position is still vacant.
“I just don’t understand one thing. I would hope your GM would be involved in these,” Boomer said. “You have to make sure two people can work together and that there is some sort of similarity in the way of thinking about the game of football.”
For Gio, he typically agrees with that sentiment, but in this particular situation, he actually believes it’s fine to hire the head coach first, as he believes an “alpha male” needs to be on the sidelines for these Jets.
“I’ve always said you hire the GM and the GM hires the heads coach,” Gio said. “However, it’s kind of hypocritical of me to say that when I’ve continued to say that the alpha male has to be the head coach.
“To me, in this instance, it’s not that crazy to go the other way and say ‘Get the CEO head coach and then find a GM that can work with that guy.’ Because in this instance, that head coach and that dude is more important than anybody.”
