It’s time for a new quarterback on the green side of MetLife Stadium, it seems, because even though he can use injury as a fallback, Mike White just didn’t look like the guy in Sunday’s loss in Seattle.
So who is the next Gang Green QB, if it’s not White or Zach Wilson?
“If they want to go the free agent route, which they’re going to have to do because they can’t start over at QB, who is the guy who best fits whoever the Jets have at offensive coordinator?” Boomer asked during Monday’s Boomer & Gio Show. “Or, does the evaluation say we need Mike White, but we have to bring someone else in here just to infuse energy.”
Boomer listed the potential big-name free agent or trade-available QBs – Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo at the top, Baker Mayfield next, and possibly Daniel Jones – but the problem, in Boomer’s eyes, is that the two guys at the top aren’t built for New York.
“Jimmy G is another guy who gets hurt all the time, and I don’t know if he’s built for New York,” Boomer said, “and I know for a fact that Derek Carr is not built for here.”
Joe Benigno advocated for Mayfield, but maybe it does have to be White, at least for a year, so the only thing Boomer could say is that maybe, just maybe, that wasn’t the true Mike White on Sunday?
“That’s not really Mike White you were watching out there yesterday,” Boomer said. “He’s not going to say that because he wants to play, but he was playing with a flak jacket on that weighs like 30 pounds, and he’s not the same guy who beat the Bears and played well in Buffalo.”
Injury is never really an excuse in Booms’ eyes, but perhaps that’s a mirage the Jets fans need to see?
“What you saw yesterday was a fraction of a player that he truly is, because he was not 100 percent,” Boomer said. “I’m sure every throw he felt it, and every time he was hit, he felt it. He’s trying to protect himself and was Checkdown Charlie, completely inaccurate with the ball fluttering out of his hands – that’s not the player that you believed in.”
With one game left that means nothing but playing out the schedule, perhaps White can get a little healthier and show something against Miami – and if not, well, there’s a whole offseason to regroup.
