Gio has no belief in Zach Wilson becoming a serviceable quarterback, but he also pities the former No. 2 overall pick for the situation he finds himself in.
As Gio watched his co-host Boomer be inducted into the Bengals Ring of Honor on Monday night, in front of thousands of adoring fans, he couldn’t help but think about how Wilson is currently experiencing the most extreme version of the exact opposite.
“As bad as it could possibly be,” Gio said. “Stuck in the blender, in the quicksand, dying a slow death because the Jets refuse to have a mercy killing of this guy. They keep just letting him suffer out there. The team suffers, the fanbase suffers, you cannot be in a worse situation than what Zach Wilson is in.”
Boomer noted that it wasn’t always smooth sailing for him during his playing time with the Jets, and he feels for Wilson, who was supposed to get a full season to develop behind the seasons and learn from a future Hall of Famer in Aaron Rodgers, and instead, has been thrown into the fire again.
“I have felt the wrath of the Jets fans,” Boomer said. “I think there is stuff Zach needed to learn, and he was in the midst of learning with Aaron Rodgers. Maybe it wasn’t enough time.
“He’s got like a pulled brain muscle. Nobody can really appreciate and understand the pressure he’s under. The entire fanbase, Joe Namath, Joe Benigno, everyone at this station is killing this kid…he’s still trying to figure it out. It’s a little bit at a time, I think that’s what they’re seeing, but it’s just not good enough for the fanbase.”
