The Jets have publicly stated that they will ride with Zach Wilson as the starting quarterback now that Aaron Rodgers is done for the season, but despite the team’s confidence in their former No. 2 overall pick, Gio doesn’t share that belief.
“He is not far removed enough from how bad he was last year for me to have any confidence in him figuring it out this quickly,” Gio said. “Last year was so bad, they had to pull him off the field…they didn’t dress him. He stood there with a clipboard because he was incompetent to a level where they couldn’t even protect him any longer.”
Both Boomer and Gio agree that the time to protect Wilson is over. No more training wheels. It’s time for the Jets to keep it real with their young quarterback and hold him accountable as he looks to save Gang Green’s season.
“It’s all on his shoulders…someone needs to just kick him in the ass,” Gio said. “Enough his enough. He had two full opportunities. Something has to change.”
“He is no longer a rookie,” Boomer added. “This is where Rob Saleh and Joe Douglas have to be tough. ‘Hey man, we have an entire organization sitting on your shoulders. You have to get your head out of your ass.’ Now is not the time to get babied. He has to earn the respect of his teammates in the locker room by not making stupid plays, by being more assertive on the field, and making sure his communication is better.”
