Boomer: Jets have to expect Aaron Rodgers injury when signing backup quarterback

It appears Mitch Trubisky won’t be back with the Steelers next season, and Gio wondered if the Pittsburgh quarterback would be an option to back up Aaron Rodgers with the Jets next season.

Boomer didn’t seem high on Trubisky, but did make it clear that finding a backup has to be among the top priorities of Gang Green’s offseason, as he is convinced that backup would need to start at least a few games next year.

“I need to see everyone that’s experienced and available, and also needs to know who is available for trade. I’m not jumping on Mitch Trubisky right now,” Boomer said. “Is Aaron Rodgers gonna have a say in this? He better not. The Jets have to do what’s in the best interest of the team, not in the best interest of one specific player…Aaron Rodgers is not a 25-year-old making $50 million a year. He’s a 40-year-old coming off an Achilles. You better have someone back there that you trust. It doesn’t matter whether Aaron Rodgers likes him or not. You gotta get a real guy in here if he has to play three or four games.”

Given Rodgers’ age and recent major surgery, Boomer says it is unrealistic to assume that he will survive the grind of a 17-game season. So, finding a backup is paramount, as last season clearly showed.

“I don’t really care what Aaron Rodgers thinks in this particular situation…they need a legitimate backup,” Boomer said. “You have to assume he gets hurt somewhere along the line. Hopefully not seriously. But to make it through 17 games man, especially coming off an Achilles injury?”
