Braylon Edwards can understand the up-and-down trajectory of young quarterbacks, especially in New York; he played with the Jets in 2009-10, the height of the Mark Sanchez era, but came back in 2012 when Sanchez struggled and was, unbeknownst at the time, in his final season with Gang Green.
So, when he joined Zach Gelb on CBS Sports Radio Tuesday night, Gelb asked Edwards the million-dollar question” should the Jets draft Trevor Lawrence if they get the No. 1 overall pick?
“That’s tough. The only reason I say yes to that is because Sam Darnold’s still young, and there will be a lot of franchises that think they can do something with him,” Edwards said. “Put him in a different system around different people and players, and maybe a new atmosphere and energy will work.”
It has been theorized by many that the Jets have done anything from fail Darnold to “ruin” him based on his first three years in the league, but it’s also a recurring theme that the Jets’ young quarterback savior never pans out; from Darnold to Sanchez, Geno Smith in between, and all the way back to Browning Nagle, it’s been a rough go for Gang Green signal-callers.
Lawrence, though, may be the juice that’s worth the squeeze.
“There’s no such thing a sure thing, but Trevor’s a monster,” Edwards said. “The way he plays the game…he’s athletic, he’s smart, he jells well with his players, and he has an innate ability to forget both the good and the bad plays. I wouldn’t be mad about it (if the Jets trade Darnold and draft Lawrence), because Trevor Lawrence is something different.”
Edwards also talked Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, and a lot of Michigan, which you can check out below.
