A caller posed the idea to Boomer and Gio that Bill Belichick is to blame for the recent failures of the Jets’ hyped young quarterbacks, but neither of them were buying it.
The caller implied that Sam Darnold’s infamous “seeing ghosts” comments came after Belichick’s Patriots exposed his weaknesses, and he never recovered. Now, Zach Wilson looked helpless in two losses to the Pats this season, and has since been benched or continued to struggle.
But Boomer and Gio don’t see New England as the common denominator.
“In that game, the second game, there were guys that were wide open, and he was completely overthrowing,” Boomer said of Wilson. “Maybe he was seeing ghosts. I don’t know. Maybe he was nervous…but he was never able to regain whatever he had going into that game from the Buffalo game.”
Gio also wanted to remind everyone that Wilson also faced two shoddy defenses and failed to do anything against them, where personnel was inferior and simply mimicking New England’s schemes wouldn’t have been enough to neutralize a competent quarterback.
“Let’s get real,” Gio said. “The two defenses he faced at home when he came back after his reset were two of the worst in football and giving up a ton of points in the Lions and the Jaguars, and he couldn’t do anything against them either.
“I don’t think they’re just looking at what Bill Belichick scheme-wise…he just couldn’t hit his receivers.”
