Mike White will be in street clothes on Sunday, and Zach Wilson will be back in pads as Robert Saleh revealed that team doctors would not clear White for contact after he sustained a ribs injury in last weekend’s loss to the Bills.
But Brandon Tierney isn’t necessarily buying that explanation.
“Maybe I just don’t trust anybody, and it’s not a knock on Saleh,” BT said when news broke of Wilson being promoted to starter again. “But let’s connect some dots here.
“For basically a month, Robert Saleh has been telling everybody that they’re gonna get Zach Wilson back out there. Was a soft landing spot in Minnesota? Not necessarily. Was a soft landing spot up in Buffalo? Absolutely not.
Even though Detroit is a good team in terms of offense, this is absolutely, by far, the softest possible landing spot in terms of what a quarterback is going to see with an opposing defense with Detroit’s defense, which stinks against the pass.”
So, what is BT getting at? Well, if you ask him, White may very well be able to play, but his recent ribs injury, which he had been practicing through and played through on Sunday when he was cleared to return to action after taking multiple heavy hits, is being used as the reason the Jets have been looking for to get their former second overall pick back on the field.
“I can’t prove this, but it is my belief, on many levels, the Jets just said, ‘Hey docs, don’t clear him. We want this kid to go back out there,’” BT said. “You have to think it’s a possibility.”
The Lions have allowed the third most passing yards in the NFL, and the Jets are back home on Sunday. Did White’s injury provide the team the perfect cover to get their hopeful franchise quarterback into game action once again? BT is hardly ruling it out.
