After the report of Jets dysfunction by The Athletic led Evan to try and calm the fanbase, many still called for Robert Saleh to be fired, as the report of his “paranoia” and leaning on Aaron Rodgers’ injury was seen as a last straw.
It put Evan in an undesirable position of sticking up for a head coach he does not believe in.
“Two things can be true,” Evan said. “Robert Saleh can be a bad head coach, but he’s also their best option. Right now, firing him is not their best option. It doesn’t make sense.
“I’m annoyed I’m in this position of defending Robert Saleh even though I don’t think Robert Saleh is good. I just think the idea of firing him today is based on fantasy sports lunacy.”
Evan doesn’t believe Saleh is the long-term answer as the Jets head coach, but to fire him now, despite Saleh having the public endorsement of Rodgers, would only enhance the dysfunction that already exists within the organization.
“The New York Jets are dysfunctional,” Evan said. “You know what would make them more dysfunctional? Firing the head coach. Firing their head coach on Feb. 1. Let’s play this game out…it’s dysfunctional now, I admit that. But what would make it more dysfunctional is firing this head coach right now, and nobody wants to take the job.”
