The Jets appeared to be oh-so-close on a blockbuster deal for Tyreek Hill, but can still be in the market for a star wide receiver to bolster the offense around Zach Wilson.
Seahawks star wideout DK Metcalf has been among the big names rumored to be potential fits for Gang Green, assuming Seattle continues to trade off assets and rebuild, but Gio has his eyes on another big name, one he says would be better than any other he’s heard so far this offseason.
“There is one path to the Jets trading for a wide receiver better than anything I’ve heard yet,” Gio said during Tuesday’s show “Who I think would be better for the Jets than DK Metcalf or Tyreek Hill, who is looking for a new contract and has been outperforming his rookie deal by leaps and bounds.
“This guy is a beast. An absolute beast. Tyreek Hill is great, don’t get me wrong…but if you gave me the choice, straight up between those two guys, I want AJ Brown.”
Brown, a star with the Titans, is certainly underpaid at just under $4 million for next season, the final year of his rookie deal. That could motivate the Pro Bowl wide receiver to seek a trade and a new contract elsewhere, which Boomer says would have to happen for the Jets if any kind of trade was to be agreed upon.
“You have to pay AJ Brown,” Boomer said. “If they trade him to the Jets, before you make the trade, you’d have to say to Tennessee, ‘Can we please talk to AJ Brown’s agent? Because we’d like to give him an extension.’ You would not take AJ Brown without having a contract in place to make sure you have him locked up for the next four or five years.”
It won’t be music to Gio’s ears that just this past week, Tennessee general manager Jon Robinson said the team wants to lock up Brown to a long-term deal, but that could be easier said than done if salary cap becomes an issue. But Brown, a second-round pick and just 24 years old, would have logged his third straight 1,000-yard season last year if he didn’t miss four games, and that is the kind of star power that Gio dreams of having in New York.
