Rex Ryan reportedly interviewed with the Cowboys for their defensive coordinator position, and Boomer and Gio are entertained at the thought of Ryan, Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy being under one roof.
But Gio doesn’t believe Ryan would take that job without already having his eyes set on the next step.
“If you bring him in, you have to understand that’s probably a shiv spot situation. He wants to be a head coach again,” Gio said. “He has made no bones about that. If he’s taking a defensive coordinator job, that means he’s got his sights on becoming a head coach once again, especially if you’re going to a place where a guy was already on the hot seat.
“If he turns that defense around and gets them playing great, doing his press conferences and being Rex, an owner can fall in love with him, and all of a sudden, he’s back in the game!”
Could the former Jets head coach take the job in Dallas with hopes of replacing McCarthy? Boomer doesn’t believe it’s likely, as he doesn’t see Ryan getting a head coaching job in the NFL again.
“I can see him back in the game as a defensive coordinator,” Boomer said. “I don’t know about a head coach. His experience in Buffalo wasn’t all that great. But if you want a volatile, high-energy guy on the sidelines calling plays for your defense, that is 100 percent your guy.”
