As a new episode of Hard Knocks gets set to air on Tuesday night, and Aaron Rodgers gets set to make his Jets debut in the team’s preseason finale, Gang Green will continue its title as the most talked-about team heading into the season.
Much of the talk has been centered around hype and excitement, but Gio has also sensed a lot of impending doom from the fanbase, and his word of advice: let that go and enjoy the ride.
“It’s very tough for me to sit here and tell a fanbase how to feel,” Gio said. “But don’t be negative until you have to be. There are so few times when everything feels great with your team. and yes, they haven’t played a game yet and none of this means anything yet…but enjoy it until you don’t.
“It’s tough to be a sports fan. It’s tough to be a Jets fan and a Knicks fan and a Mets fan…you’ve got all these horrible memories. But right now, going into this season, you gotta get rid of the [Joe] Benigno gene for a little bit. You just have to.”
Jets fans have known nothing but pain for decades, but Gio says it’s best to shed that mentality and embrace the hype surrounding the team. Jerry agrees, and says the expectations are there for a reason, and there’s no reason to think this team can’t live up to them.
“This is it. This is their time,” Jerry said. “Yes, there are good teams in the AFC, but it’s Aaron Rodgers, it’s this really good defense. Go out and win the damn thing.”
