If Jets fans were expecting more clarity in terms of where the team might go in terms of the quarterback position this offseason, they didn’t get much of it during Gang Green’s locker room cleanout interviews on Monday.
The Jets brass, as they have since benching Zach Wilson earlier in the season, continued to publicly express belief and confidence in the former No. 2 overall pick, though general manager Joe Douglas did say that the team would look at any potential avenue to improve the team.
“Yes, we are going to continue to develop Zach, and how that quarterback room looks next year, we're at the very infant stages of putting this offseason plan together,” Douglas said. “We're going to explore every single avenue that we have to upgrade this team and upgrade this roster.”
As for head coach Robert Saleh, who earlier in the season said that people get too caught up in the “instant coffee” mentality of wanting to see players rise to stardom instantly, he still believes that Wilson will show why he was so highly regarded before the 2021 draft, and expects to see a much more improved version of Wilson in year three.
“I do expect him to take a jump going into his third year and understanding how to handle everything, just decompressing and resetting and all that,” Saleh said. “I think he's going to have a tremendous amount of growth. I do expect him to have that big jump.
“Whatever happens from there, happens.”
