The Jets reportedly signed former Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing to be the team’s passing game coordinator on Monday, as Downing comes having spent the past four seasons in Tennessee working with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill, who has plenty of experience in the AFC East due to his time with the Dolphins, could be on his way to being cut by the Titans so help with the team’s salary cap crunch, which could leave Tannehill out for the taking for any team in need of a quarterback.
The Jets are certainly one of those teams, but would they covet Tannehill, a 34-year-old who finished last season with the lowest completion percentage in his four-year Titans tenure?
According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Gang Green may be higher on Tannehill than some think.
Per Hughes, “there’s a feeling around the NFL that the Jets are much higher on [Tannehill] than some want to believe,” meaning he could be on the team’s Mount Rushmore of coveted veteran quarterbacks, one that includes Aaron Rodgers at the top, Derek Carr, and likely Jimmy Garoppolo.
Would Tannehill be a strong consolation prize if the Jets can’t land Rodgers? He led the league in quarterback rating in 2019, his lone Pro Bowl season, and had another very strong season in 2020, but has dropped off in the years since, and while he certainly would be an upgrade over Zach Wilson, he wouldn’t vault the Jets into a contender like Rodgers, or even Carr, would.
But the Jets apparently would give him a long look if their top targets don’t pan out.
