The Jets won’t have Mike White on Sunday against the Lions, seemingly making their task even more difficult against a surging Lions squad with a thriving offense behind the resurgent Jared Goff.
But despite the setback, the stakes remain the same in the eyes of Joe Benigno: Gang Green has to win on Sunday, and again four days later, or else the season is toast.
“The Jets have to win this game tomorrow,” Joe said to open Saturday’s show. “If the Jets are making the playoffs, they have to win tomorrow and they have to win Thursday against the Jaguars. They have to be 9-6 when they go to Seattle and play the Seahawks.
“There’s no reason the Jets can’t beat the Seahawks, and there’s no reason they can’t beat the smell fish, those Dolphins. There’s no reason they can’t win all four of these games. They have to win at least three of these games. They’re gonna need 10 wins to get in.”
If the Jets are unable to win these next two games and fall short of a playoff berth, there will be some who try to take a bigger-picture view and appreciate the surprisingly strong season that the young group put together.
Joe won’t be in that category, not when they’re knocking on the door of a postseason return.
“Don’t tease me and have the kind of year you’ve had…then miss the playoffs and talk about what a good year you had,” Joe said.
